Duchess Sophie set to break cover with major move

Duchess Sophie, who has surprisingly stepped back from the spotlight since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the UK, is set to break cover with major engagement.

The Duchess of Edinburgh, 61, will reportedly visit to Cumbria next Tuesday September 8, and Wednesday September 9, for a programme of engagements focusing on the rural economy.

Prince Edward's wife will highlight opportunities for young people in agriculture, sustainable food production and rural skills development.

The Duchess, who has been patron of the Addington Fund since 2021, will officially open the first farm within the charity’s new entrant scheme at Whins Farm, near Kendal.

The scheme supports first-generation farmers and helps secure the future of small-scale hill farms.

She will also visit Home Grown Here, near Penrith, to learn about community-led approaches to sustainable food production. The mother-of-two will meet volunteers, growers and partners involved in local food supply chains and improving access to fresh produce.

The two-day visit will conclude in Borrowdale, near Keswick, with visits to Nook Farm and Seatoller Farm. She will see how upland farming businesses are combining traditional farming practices with diversification.

The announcement comes amid Harry and Meghan’s surprise presence in the UK.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Edinburgh, widely seen as King Charles’ secret weapon, has been notably out of the spotlight.
