Queen Mette-Marit faces Grand Duchess Stéphanie after 'come save us' remark

Queen Mette-Marit is facing an awkward royal reunion next week, when she is expected to see Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg for the first time since private comments about her wedding emerged in the Jeffrey Epstein document release.

Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie are due in Oslo on Wednesday, September 9, to represent Luxembourg at the state funeral of King Harald V at Oslo Cathedral.

Their attendance is likely to put Mette-Marit and Stéphanie in the same room again, more than a decade after the Norwegian royal was revealed to have described the Luxembourg royal wedding as “boring” in an email exchange with Epstein.

She also complained that the venue was filled with “old people” and compared the setting to “some kind of old movie”.

The reunion comes at a particularly significant moment for Mette-Marit. She became Queen Consort of Norway last week after her husband, King Haakon, succeeded his father following King Harald's death.

Norwegian royal family is expected to welcome monarchs and representatives from across Europe for Harald's funeral.

Mette-Marit’s own attendance, however, remains dependent on her health. 

The Queen, who has pulmonary fibrosis and underwent a lung transplant in June, withdrew from Haakon's swearing-in ceremony at short notice on Monday after experiencing health complications.

She remains scheduled to attend the funeral.
