British press forced to issue statement on Harry, Meghan announcement

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been in the UK for over two weeks but apart from the time cameras captured them arriving at Birmingham airport, there has been no sighting since.

However, there have been plenty of headlines for the couple, which seemed to have caused a stir among the British public. There had been “too much” coverage of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that BBC issued a statement for the complaint.

The broadcaster did not share how many complaints it received from disgruntled viewers, but dismissed the claims being made about its reportage.

Prince Harry had appeared in an interview last year, where he said that he would not be able to bring back his wife and children to UK if he cannot have the taxpayer-funded protection. BBC noted that the news of the Sussex return was “unexpected” and the “announcement raised several questions”.

They explained that idea was to cover key matters such as the roles they would fulfil in the country, the security issue and how it would be funded. Moreover, dealing with British media and navigating family relations has also been a topic of public interest.

“We gave appropriate scrutiny to these issues, reflecting the context in which they occur.”

It continued, “We detailed the circumstances relating to the couple’s departure from the UK in 2020 and the timeline of events which have had an impact on their relationship with the Royal Family and the media. We made clear Harry and Meghan won’t be resuming royal duties.”

The broadcaster insisted that the articles about the couple’s return had been “the most read on our website over the last two weeks”.

“We appreciate not everyone would share this view. We continued to report on many other stories of national and international significance,” they said. “We believe our approach to this story was proportionate, offering legitimate analysis of the different implications.”
