King Charles fulfils Prince William's plea as Harry receives clear message

King Charles was forced to intervene before the buzz surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle turned into a full-blown turmoil that the royals couldn’t afford at the time.

The Palace had shared the monarch’s reaction to the Sussexes returning, noting that he “welcomed” the idea of having them close-by. Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate kept tight-lipped but sources insisted that the Prince of Wales was not happy.

Speculations surrounding the Sussexes returning to royal duties also emerged but Charles had to shut it down, clarifying that the Sandringham Agreement still stands. And Prince William had a big role in the move, according to sources cited by Rob Shuter.

“William had had enough of the confusion,” a royal source said. “Lord Lieutenancies were asking how Harry and Meghan should be treated. William’s answer was brutally simple: nothing has changed. They are out.”

Charles remains King, but William’s opinion also matters to him as the heir to the throne. Moreover, with his ongoing cancer battle, Charles has been delegating more tasks to his son.

William is determined to set the boundaries for the Sussexes. He reportedly understands that his father wants to be closer to Archie and Lilibet but that doesn’t mean that royal positions can be handed out in emotional decisions.

“William has won, for now,” the source added. “Harry and Meghan are back in Britain — but they’re not back in the royal family.”

The statement from Palace confirms that while Harry and Meghan do not represent the King but their HRH styles “remain in abeyance”. They cannot use HRH and remain “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
