Andrew Garfield revisits moment he found out about 'Spider-Man' casting

Andrew Garfield is looking back at the moment he was told he’d be playing Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man — a moment that was captured in a now-viral video.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, September 9, the 43-year-old actor — who put on the Spidey mask before Tom Holland and after Tobey Maguire — revisited the minutes leading up to his casting for the 2012 film.

“Damn, man. That was…” began Garfield. “All of us in our lives, we have those little threshold moments where it’s like, ‘Oh, everything just changed forever.’”

The life-changing moment occurred while Garfield was in Cancun promoting The Social Network by Sony Pictures, the same studio behind The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. Garfield recalled being ushered into a hotel suite by then-studio head Amy Pascal’s assistant, who told him Pascal simply wanted to thank him for his work.

But in reality, Garfield was about to learn that he was cast as the next web-shooter.

“I had auditioned and I was waiting to hear, and I was like, ‘I’m probably not going to get it. There’s probably someone better,’” Garfield recalled. “But I remember going up to her hotel suite and I was brought in the door…There were flip camera set up in the corner of the lobby and there was a red light recording and I was like, ‘Oh s***, I think I might be Spider-Man.’”

Host Kimmel chimed in to quip, “Your Spidey sense was tingling.”

In the video capturing the moment, Garfield appeared to be in disbelief before saying, “It’s going to be impossible to take in. I’m flattered, I’m honoured, and I will work as hard as any boy has ever worked.”

The Oscar-nominated actor portrayed Peter Parker/ Spider-Man for two films before the franchise was cancelled. However, he would put on his Spider-Man suit once again alongside Maguire and Holland in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
