Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde's 'The Invite' heads to HBO Max

A24's breakout comedy The Invite will begin streaming exclusively on HBO Max on Friday, October 23, with its HBO linear debut following the next night, Saturday, October 24, at 8 p.m. ET. 

Directed by Olivia Wilde and written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, the film is an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs (Sentimental) by Cesc Gay.

The dark comedy stars Seth Rogen and Wilde as Joe and Angela, a couple whose marriage is on thin ice, with Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz playing Hawk and Piña, their enigmatic upstairs neighbors, whose presence at a dinner party sends the night spiraling in unexpected directions. 

The film premiered at Sundance to strong reviews before opening theatrically on June 26, going on to gross over $55 million worldwide against a reported $15 million budget, a significant breakout for the indie release. 

It currently holds a 96% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its sharp comic writing and strong ensemble performances. David Permut, Ben Browning and Megan Ellison produced.

The streaming date lines up with the historical pattern of Warner Bros. Discovery's "Pay-1" distribution deal with A24, under which the studio's films typically arrive on HBO Max roughly 119 days after their theatrical debut. 

Wilde's next project, the holiday comedy Naughty for Universal Pictures, is currently in the works.
