Earl Spencer scores big against King Charles: 'Unwise decision'

King Charles made a big 'mistake' with a furious statement released soon after Earl Spencer's Diana book buzz.

Prince William and Prince Harry's uncle left the world in shock when he claimed that Charles was being "giddily excited" when he broke the news of Diana's tragic death on a phone call.

He accused the then Prince of Wales of behaving like he won a lottery as Princess Diana's passing cleared his way to marry Camilla.

After the first bombshell preview of Swan Song: Diana, My Sister was released, Buckingham Palace issued an urgent statement, which was later dubbed unwise by a royal author.

King Charles' team said, "While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss."

This message left Earl Spencer angry, and he came back with a more scathing response, stating that the King is "gaslighting" him.

Now, speaking of the move, which unexpectedly gave a big win to Earl Spencer, author Andrew Morton told The Telegraph that the monarch "got it wrong."

He added, "With [Earl] Spencer's book, he, within an hour or so, issued a statement.

"I would have thought that sensible courtiers would have said to him, 'Hang fast, sir, because it's only a book - these things will pass.'

"But I think it's a sign of how angry he was that this statement was written almost contemporaneously, and in a way, it's a statement written for an audience of one, and that's King Charles."
