Bradley Cooper is going from Hollywood heartthrob to G.I. Joe soldier.
Paramount Pictures announced Thursday that the Oscar-winning actor will play Duke in a new G.I. Joe movie based on the Hasbro toy line.
The Righteous Gemstones star Danny McBride is directing and co-writing the film with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri.
And this isn’t simply another chapter in the old franchise. Paramount is starting over, with the new movie being reimagined separately from the previously planned G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover.
McBride has already teased a rather wild setup, saying the story follows Duke and other Joes in Springfield, a seemingly normal town that is secretly controlled by Cobra.
“You're following Duke and a group of other Joes. There's that town in the comics, Springfield, which is a town that's secretly all Cobra. That is where our film takes place. We have some pretty interesting people lining up to be in it, too. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but it looks like it's going to be pretty fun.”
The project marks the first new G.I. Joe movie under the Paramount Skydance regime and arrives after the franchise went quiet following 2021’s Snake Eyes, which earned around $40 million worldwide.
The series previously launched on the big screen with 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, followed by 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, starring Dwayne Johnson.
Now, Cooper is stepping into Duke’s boots as Paramount tries to give the franchise another shot.
With a secret Cobra town, a new Duke and McBride behind the camera, this G.I. Joe reboot already sounds like it has some serious chaos planned.
