UET Taxila students up in arms against university's 'extremist' policies

TAXILA: Having had enough with the "inadequate" facilities and unfriendly policies of the administration, students of University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila are up in arms.
Dozens of students are protesting on campus against what they term are the varsity's stifling policies and insufficient facilities for students.
They allege that there is support for "religious extremism" and "extremists" by the varsity administration. There are also complaints that students are not allowed to sit with their colleagues of the opposite gender despite it being a coeducational institute as well as being refrained from gathering in groups of more than two.
Students said in a statement that they are fined and abused by the university officials if they violate these rules.
Moreover, the students claim that the varsity does not allow them to celebrate any events, including farewell and welcome parties for batches, and even Independence Day.
There are also complaints regarding the quality of food and drinking water, as well as, timings of hostels.
They said the girls' hostel closes down at 3:30pm while they are only allowed to order food up till 7pm.
The engineering students also said that there have been virtually no tours of industries in the last two years.
Meanwhile, officials of the university told Geo News they are trying to resolve the issues of students but appealed for them to break up the demonstration.
However, the students have vowed to stay put until their demands are addressed.
