Suits LA has been canceled after just one season, and an executive has explained why they didn’t renew the show for a second season.

When the original show Suits was made available on Netflix, the show saw a rapid resurgence and got such high viewership numbers that the creators thought a spin-off would be welcomed by fans. However, the spin-off’s first season got only 2.35 million viewers, much less than the original and a 39% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Suits LA centered on New York prosecutor Ted Black, who was now leading a firm that specializes in criminal and entertainment law. The show featured cameos from Patton Oswalt, Brian Baumgartner and Enrico Colantoni, as well as original cast member Gabriel Macht.

When asked why the cancellation came to be, NBCUniversal’s President of Program Planning Strategy Jeff Bader remarked that “it’s so hard to talk about shows and which ones we’re bringing back.”

According to Deadline, he elaborated: “Suits: LA had a very short run, but it really has not resonated [with audiences in] the way we thought it would.”

“There can be many, many reasons why it hasn’t resonated, but it’s just not showing the potential to grow for us in the future, unfortunately. Those are the decisions we had to make,” he noted.

“And we had to make some hard decisions,” he added of Suits LA.
