Dolly Parton has finally broken her silence on what she really thought of Beyonce’s unexpected spin on her iconic hit Jolene.
For the unversed, the 79-year-old American singer-songwriter and musician’s 1973 song Jolene has been loved for many years and in 2024, Beyonce dropped her own version of the song, which is included in her album Cowboy Carter.
However, the 43-year-old American singer-songwriter and actress changed the sound and important lyrics, making it like a warning instead of Porton’s plea.
Notably, the original song has, “I’m beggin’ of you, please don’t take my man,” while Beyonce changed it to, “I’m warning you, don’t come for my man.”
While giving an interview to PEOPLE magazine, Porton sang praises of Beyonce and her knack for music.
She said, “I’m a huge fan of hers — I mean, who's not? Everybody loves her. I think she's a magnificent artist, beautiful and the dancing in addition to the singing.”
Porton admitted Cowboy Carter’s supremacy, calling it a “really, really good album.”
The Grammy winner went on to express her take on the changes Beyoncé made in her song Jolene.
She quipped, “I was just honored that she, of course, did a completely different take on ‘Jolene’ than my version of it. Hers was more like, ‘Well, you're not getting him, you're not taking him, you're going to go through me to get him.’ Mine was more like, ‘Please don't take him!’ So, I loved her interpretation.”
“As a writer, you like to hear how different people interpret your songs, and how they put their own spin and do their own take on it. But I was very proud of it, and I hope her tour does great, and I'm sure it will. People seem to be loving it,” Dolly Parton concluded.
