Shakira reveals why she wore 'a lot' of makeup early on in career

Shakira revealed to cover up a 'lack of confidence' early on in her career she relied on heavy makeup.

During a recent chat with Allure for a “Beauty Then & Now” segment, the 48-year-old singer reflected on her early career, especially during the 2000s when she was still finding her style.

In the segment, the outlet showed her a photo from her first Latin Grammy Awards in 2000, where the singer wore smoky eye makeup, bright pink blush, and glossy lips.

“Back then, when I was younger, I think I took even more time to get ready,” Shakira commented on the snap while looking back.

“I think the lack of experience, probably and the lack of confidence made me wear a lot more makeup, and be extra concerned," she confessed.

“And now, I’m a little more confident," the Waka Waka hitmaker added.

The Colombian singer-songwriter also shared that she usually does her own makeup and rarely lets others do it and now she chose to go more natural.

“When it comes to beauty and when it comes to performing, I need to feel as natural as possible,” Shakira said noting she avoids wigs and very high heels.

“I need to be as organic as possible because the way I move is like that," she added.
