Dakota Johnson has recently shared her real experience of working as a producer in Hollywood.
The Fifty Shades of Grey star reveals that she’s “in an internal battle all the time” working in the movie industry during an in-depth conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival on December 5.
“I grew up in this industry. I grew up on set watching my parents work and watching how they would engage with movie-makers, producers and collaborators and I always wanted to be a larger part of the project,” states the actress.
Dakota, who has been balancing acting and producing since the creation of TeaTime Pictures, notes that she’s in a “love-hate relationship with my job in all aspects”.
The Madame Web actress finds it “exhausting” at times while speaking up about her experience at the festival on Friday.
Dakota points out, “Producing you see behind the curtain and it’s really ugly. I don’t like it.”
The actress-turned-producer has also realised that financiers “are really shady sometimes is heartbreaking”.
“As a producer, it’s heartbreaking. As an actress, it’s heartbreaking. But [my job] it’s also quite fulfilling, and I’m very grateful I get to do both,” says the 36-year-old.
Looking back at her career, the Splitsville actress opens up that she’s “learning what is right” for her.
“I’ve definitely been persuaded to do things in the past that I realise in retrospect weren’t right for me,” continues Dakota.
However, the Materialists actress mentions, “That’s also part of the experience, and I’m lucky I have a job.”
Meanwhile, Dakota, who completed seven movies as a producer in seven years, adds that producing is “more challenging”.
“There’s something about acting where I feel, I’m in a bubble, and producing, you see behind the curtain and it’s really ugly,” concludes the American star.
