OpenAI has officially released the upgraded version of its chatbot, ChatGPT 5.5, marking a major leap towards Agentic AI. The latest upgrade was rolled out on April 23, 2026 to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.
The San-Francisco based company announced the upgrade to its flagship chatbot in its blog, revealing that the latest model excels in:
The American AI technology company said that GPT-5.5 can be used for multi-part messy tasks, adding that it can plan and navigate through hurdles to complete the assigned task.
The key upgrades in the latest model include:
GPT-5.5 delivers higher intelligence while using fewer tokens and running at speeds comparable to the previous version. It needs fewer retries to get things right, making it feel more reliable for tough jobs.
Up to 400K tokens in Codex (roughly hundreds of pages) and a full 1 million tokens via the API, perfect for working with massive codebases or long documents.
One of the biggest highlights is native "computer use", the model can see your screen, click, type, and navigate apps. It scored 78.7% on OSWorld-Verified benchmarks, a big jump from before.
OpenAI calls it their strongest agentic coding model yet. It excels at writing, debugging, editing large codebases, and even building full features from natural language prompts.
Early user feedback from developers describes it as having "serious conceptual clarity" and making the building feel "like magic" instead of endless trial and error.
The model is now available in ChatGPT for paid users, with a dedicated GPT-5.5 Pro tier for heavier workloads.
