NA approves resolution seeking new date for LB polls
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution seeking a new date for local bodies (LB) elections in the country.

The resolution tabled by PTI's Arif Alvi states that holding LB polls in haste may be detrimental to democracy in the country and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should announce a new date for polls in accordance with the constitution.

The March 2014 date was excluded from the resolution and replaced with ‘as soon as possible.’ According to the resolution, it is the responsibility of the ECP to conduct free and fair elections.

On November 7, a resolution seeking more time to hold LB polls was approved unanimously. The resolution contended that holding LB elections in haste would cast doubt on their legitimacy.

Meanwhile the Supreme Court on Tuesday (Nov 12) rejected a petition by the ECP seeking a four month extension in conducting the LB elections.
