DG NAB Karachi, Lahore tender resignations

ISLAMABAD: The National Bureau of Accountability’s officers, whose appointments did not meet the organisation’s criteria for induction, started opting for retirement, in light of the recent Supreme Court orders in the ongoing case against illegal appointments in the NAB.

Director General NAB Karachi Col (retd) Naeem-ur-Rehman and DG NAB Lahore Tariq Mehmood were among those who resigned from their posts.

Out of the nine officers whose appointments were made in violation of relevant rules, two other directors have already accepted pre-mature retirement.

The retirement announcements came after the Supreme Court took up suo moto action against illegalities, corruption and violations in appointments within the organisation.

The apex court had asked Chairman NAB to present the option to opt for retirement with pension benefits or present a strong justification for their stay in the organisation.

The NAB in a report submitted in the case before the Supreme Court had stated that the three DGs, and three other officers, did not need to possess qualification for their initial appointment.

“Nevertheless, subsequent promotions were not in accordance with TCS (terms and conditions of service),” NAB admitted in a statement made by the Bureau’s Counsel in pursuance of the order dated 22 March 2017.

An official report on illegal absorptions and subsequent promotions in NAB filed before the Supreme Court of Pakistan has brought to light facts suggesting that several NAB officers were posted to BPS-18 positions illegally, as they did not possess the requisite post academic experience of five years.

The Bench hearing the suo moto case is headed by Justice Amir Hani Muslim, who is also the author of landmark judgments that have led to cancellations of appointments and demotions of thousands of police and other officers since 2013.
