No man has probably felt the rollercoaster ride of emotions as intensely this PSL as Lahore Qalandars’ South African all-rounder David Wiese.
On February 22, in front of a loud crowd in Sharjah while chasing Multan Sultans’ mammoth total of 200, Wiese hit a six off the last ball to secure an emphatic win for Lahore Qalandars.
A day later, as Lahore Qalandars were defending 143 against Quetta Gladiators, Wiese was the unfortunate bowler when Sarfraz Ahmed hit him for a maximum to win the match off the last ball.
“That’s the beauty of this sport, its highs and lows,” Wiese recalled the dramatic two days in an interview with Geo.
“You can go from winning the game to losing the game [in no time]. There are new challenges every day. It’s such an enjoyable sport,” the 33-year old said.
On his experience playing for Lahore Qalandars this season, Wiese said he could feel the energy in the team as soon as he joined their camp.
“It’s been fantastic. As soon as I got here I could feel that it’s a good team. I’m really enjoying myself so far.”
Praising PSL as a platform for emerging talent to shine, Wiese said Pakistan cricket has been on the rise since PSL was started in 2016.
“Cricket in Pakistan has been on the up since PSL. [Pakistan team] won the Champions Trophy, and they’re one of the top teams in [the upcoming] World Cup. Tournaments like these give an advantage to the local players… that’s how they learn and get better,” Wiese said, mentioning rising fast bowler Haris Rauf as one example.
The all-rounder said he is looking forward to playing the PSL matches in Pakistan. “Pakistan is such a passionate [cricketing] nation. I’m expecting nothing less than a sellout crowd.”
