An acclaimed actress, Brooke Shields, has shared the harrowing details of a "violent" and "excruciatingly painful" miscarriage.
In her new book, Brooks Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old, the 59-year-old actress talked about having a miscarriage in her mid-thirties.
Articulating her traumatic experience, she penned, "In my midthirties, I had an irregular pap smear, which required me to get a cone biopsy, which is a procedure to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix.”
The Blue Lagoon star revealed that the doctors found abnormal cells that could have turned into cancer and because of that, they had to remove part of her cervix, which caused her excruciating pain and made her feel like "my entire uterus had fallen onto the bathroom floor."
"The doctor also failed to mention that such an aggressive biopsy could result in so much scar tissue that it could become difficult to conceive. And shortly after we got married, I went to the doctor to get checked out,” Shields mentioned.
She also said the doctor found that scar tissue from her cone biopsy had made her cervix tight and short.
Notably, this caused so much damage that they could not use a catheter to put an embryo in her uterus for IVF and ended up going through her belly button.
The Pretty Baby actress added, "Amazingly, that first IVF round was successful, and I became pregnant — only to miscarry three months later," Shields wrote. "And what ensued was probably the worst twelve straight hours of my life."
"The miscarriage was so violent and excruciatingly painful that when it came time for a second IVF attempt, I actually asked my doctor, 'Do you think it hurt so much because the scar tissue was getting stretched? Is that possible??" she concluded.
It is pertinent to mention that Brooks Shields’ first child, daughter Rowan, was born in 2003, while her second daughter, Grier, arrived in 2006.
