Megan Hilty is earning critical acclaim, and her second Tony Award nomination, for her standout performance in Broadway’s Death Becomes Her, now running at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
Stepping into the role of Madeline Ashton, a glamorous and vain Hollywood diva originally portrayed by Meryl Streep in the 1992 cult film, Hilty brings her signature charm, vocals, and sharp comedic timing to the stage.
In a surprising twist, the 44-year-old star adds her own flair to the role by ad-libbing one line each night, a freedom granted by director Christopher Gattelli.
In regards to this, Hilty revealed at the Tony Awards “Meet the Nominees” press event on May 8, “I’m allowed to improvise one line, and it’s the best part. No one knows what I’m going to say — not even the cast.”
Moreover, the unscripted moment occurs during Madeline’s over-the-top televised wedding scene in Act I, where she announces a made-up sponsor for the nuptials.
Additionally, Hilty has kept audiences on their toes with surprise shout outs like “Arby’s: We Have the Meats!” and “Get in the Zone, AutoZone!”
As per the publication, She even gave a nod to Broadway peer Kristin Chenoweth by declaring Wicked: The Musical as the wedding sponsor when Chenoweth attended a performance.
Furthermore, Hilty said, “I just love seeing everyone’s reactions."
Death Becomes Her leads this year’s Tony Awards race with 10 nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
Co-star Jennifer Simard, who portrays Helen Sharp (played by Goldie Hawn in the film), also earned a nomination.
Like Hilty, Simard is given room to improvise, ending each show with a new humorous line alongside Hilty.
