Rivian's Digital Keys now available in Apple Wallet: How to make the most

Rivian owners can finally use their phones as proper keys, thanks to the upcoming over-the-air (OTA) .46 software update that introduces Digital Key support for second-generation R1S and R1T vehicles.

Rivian's upcoming massive software update allows users to store digital keys directly in their Apple Wallet on iPhones and Apple Watches, making controlling Rivian cars is going to be more convenient.

The integration is backed by Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for precise, hands-free unlocking, alongside NFC capabilities. This indicates that even if your phone battery dies, you can still unlock your Rivian for up to five hours using Apple’s Power Reserve feature.

Updated number of digital keys for Rivian vehicles

The American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer is also increasing the number of digital keys per vehicle from four to eight, allowing multiple family members to access the vehicle easily. This feature isn't limited to Apple users, because compatibility with Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet is also on the horizon.

For those who previously owned Rivian's Gen 1 vehicles, this update offers a significant upgrade over the Bluetooth unlocking method, which was unreliable most of the time.

The new Digital Key support aligns Rivian with industry standards, leveraging Apple’s CarKey framework and making the most of the advanced hardware in the Gen 2 platform.

This simple advancement, extending remote control to Rivian cars, also lets users leave bulky key fobs at home without fear of being stranded.
