Apple issues urgent iOS 26 update warning after spyware targets iPhones

Apple has issued a major security warning to iPhone users, asking iPhone 11 and new users to upgrade to iOS 26.

The tech giant revealed that the browser engine that powers Safari and all browsers on iOS faced security issues with WebKit. A mercenary spyware attacked iPhones, prompting authorities to issue warnings and making it essential for users to update to iOS 26 to keep their data safe.

Apple stated that the spyware was used to launch sophisticated attacks against targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 26.

Forbes reported the warning from the government of the United States (U.S.) came after it became clear that nearly 50 percent of users have not yet upgraded to iOS 26.

According to Apple, iOS’s latest version offers enhanced security, including anti-scam feature for calls and messages, improved Safari fingerprint defence, and safeguards against dangerous wired connections.

In the updated version, Apple Intelligence is integrated into even more places to help users communicate across languages, create more personal images, and get more done.

iPhones are usually considered less vulnerable to security breaches than Android devices due to Apple's strict ecosystem.

However, recent data show that sophisticated attacks can bypass even iOS security, especially if users do not update to the latest versions like iOS 26.
