Toto member reveals ‘awkward’ interaction with Rivers Cuomo

Toto’s guitarist, Steve Lukather, sat down for an interview on the radio show New & Approved where he opened up about his opinion on Rivers Cuomo.

His comments refer to a cover of their song Africa that was done by the latter's band, Weezer. It went on to become their most successful hit in years, hitting No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stealing the top spot on their alternative songs chart.

Lukather, however, isn’t sure what Cuomo’s real feeling towards the track are, as he explained, "I don’t know about him loving the song, man. I don’t think that’s the case at all. I think he did it to take the piss out of it, and it blew up in his face and now he’s got to play it every night.”

He admitted that he had made an effort to have discussions with the Weezer member, but it didn’t go very well, "I tried to reach out to this guy and be friendly and then it just got weird.”

Despite the interaction, the guitarist wished Cuomo and his band the best, “I don’t want to get into it, but — peace and love. It was good for them, it was good for us."
