Jennifer Lawrence’s character in Die My Love is a new mom suffering from mental illness and descending into madness.
Lawrence is now reflecting on the challenge of separating what her character did from what she would do as a mother.
“As a mother, it was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what she would do. And it was just heartbreaking,” Lawrence told Variety at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of the film.
The Hunger Games star also reflected on how isolating new motherhood can be without a community to support the woman.
“I had just had my firstborn, and there’s not really anything like postpartum. It’s extremely isolating, which is so interesting. When Lynne moves this couple into Montana, she doesn’t have a community,” she said.
“She doesn’t have her people. But the truth is, extreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolating, no matter where you are. You feel like an alien,” continued the Oscar winner.
Die My Love, which stars Robert Pattinson as Lawrence’s helpless husband, is based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel of the same name. It depicts the new mother’s struggle with depression that leads to psychosis and the effects of that on the couple’s marriage.
