Nicki Minaj has revealed that she has considered walking away from the music industry multiple times throughout her career, despite her unprecedented success.
In a candid conversation with Vogue Italia, the 42-year-old rapper, who holds the title of the world’s best-selling female rapper with over 100 million records sold, opened up about the emotional toll of constant public scrutiny and the personal sacrifices she’s made for her career.
In regards to this, she admitted, “I’ve heard every possible criticism about me. I’ve thought about quitting so many times. I’m glad I didn’t. I hope my story can be an inspiration and push kids, adults, anyone, not to give up.”
Moreover, Minaj, who shares a four-year-old son with her husband, Kenneth “Zoo” Petty, also spoke about the difficult decision to delay motherhood to focus on her music and provide for her family, as per Daily Mail.
She added, “A lot of women in the industry, especially older than me, never had children. Some don’t regret it, but others do. I didn’t attend every Thanksgiving, Christmas, or birthday party because I had to work. I think the price was not having a 'normal' life.”
As per the outlet, Minaj said the challenges of being a public figure persist as she noted, “When we go out, I have to worry that someone will take his picture."
While reflecting on her early years, Minaj described herself as a determined child who could spot “stupidity” in adults and developed a strong sense of discipline in response to her chaotic surroundings.
Furthermore, she said, “I had to fight for everything. I had nothing, and I wanted it more than anyone else. I used to tell people, ‘I’m going to make it.’ Almost like I already knew.”
