King Charles has been mocked by a leader of an anti-monarchy group  after the monarch returned from a short trip to Canada.

Sharing a tweet about Donald Trump's new statement suggesting Canada become the United States' 51st state, Graham Smith, the CEO of Republic, sarcastically wrote, "So that visit from Charles really worked."

The King, who is Canada's head of state, had undertaken the symbolic visit in a show of support to the nation after Donald Trump's rhetoric on annexation.

As King Charles and Queen Camilla left Canada, the US president took to his Truth Social platform and repeated his desire to make the country a US state.

Trump said that a proposed Golden Dome missile defense shield that he has previously said Canada wanted to be part of would cost Ottawa $61 billion.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said last week that the country is looking at potential investments in the proposed $175-billion project.

During his speech to the Canadian parliament, King Charles on Tuesday expressed his love for the country, which he described as "strong and free."

Charles referred to "the country that Canadians and I love so much" but did not mention Trump, who has imposed tariffs on Canadian exports and muses about turning Canada into the 51st US state.
