How many languages does King Charles speak?

King Charles has been praised for his language skills after his recent visit to Canada.

The monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, returned from Canada on Tuesday after a short visit to the country.

During his two-day trip, he delivered a speech in both English and French to formally open the 45th session of Parliament.

Showcasing his linguistic abilities, the monarch expressed his "greatest admiration" for Canada.

While English is his native language, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth studied French in school.

He has demonstrated fluency in French, notably during his speech in Canada and during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in 2020.

Charles learned  German through family ties and schooling, with his father, Prince Philip, being fluent in the language.

King Charles has given speeches in German, including at an embassy event in Berlin in 2009 and a state banquet in April 2023.

He studied Welsh for one academic term at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth.

He has spoken Welsh on various occasions, including his investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969 and more recently in 2020 and 2022.

He also displayed his knowledge of Italian during a speech to both houses of Italy's parliament on April 9, 2025, where he delivered part of his address in Italian.
