King Charles has released a heartbreaking statement as the monarch reacted to the sad news from Austria.

A former student killed 10 people when he opened fire at a high school in southeastern Austria on Tuesday before taking his own life.

Seven of the victims were female and three male, authorities said without specifying their ages.

Twelve people suffered severe injuries and police said support was being provided to witnesses and those affected.

The suspect acted alone and took his own life in the school toilet, police said.

According to police, the alleged perpetrator was an Austrian from the Graz region, who used two legally owned weapons.

He was a former student at the high school, but had not finished his studies, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner told reporters.

Following the tragic incident, Palace released a statement of King Charles.

King Charles says, “My wife and I were deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the appallingly tragic events at the Dreierschützengasse school in Graz. Schools should be places of sanctuary and learning, which makes this horrific attack on students and staff all the more dreadful.”

He further said, “Our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those affected by this terrible loss of life and injury. We send our deepest sympathy to all Austrians at this profoundly distressing time.”
