Sarah Jessica Parker had an adorable reason for arguing against her character Carrie Bradshaw addressing the camera on Sex and the City.
Parker told the bosses of the show that she thought breaking the fourth wall" would seem odd to audiences.
The topic came up during John Benjamin Hickey’s appearance on Kristin Davis’ podcast Are You a Charlotte?.
John played Thomas John Anders, a playwright who dates Cynthia Nixon's Miranda.
Davis noted that Parker was against talking to the camera and also shared the sweet reason behind that.
"Sarah Jessica's very open mission was to get rid of talking to the camera," Davis recalled.
She continued, "Because I remember in the pilot her saying, 'You know, do I have to talk to the camera? It's so strange to break the fourth wall. I'm in this scene.'"
Davis then shared that Parker told her she was "worried about Ferris Bueller, which I had never thought of."
Ferris Bueller was played by Parker’s then newly wedded husband Matthew Broderick, and she didn’t think she couldn’t outdo him.
Davis said that Parker "thought she was never going to live up to that, which is so adorable."
Davis then praised Parker for her ability to convey her ideas and thoughts effectively.
She said, "I had never seen an actress be able to speak so clearly about what they wanted to do and what they didn't want to do without being angry or histrionic or whatever."
Davis added, "Just very clearly articulating why it was hard for her, why she felt like she wasn't doing it well, how she felt like it was better to stay with us in the scene. And I was like, 'Yes. Yes. I agree with her.'"
Sex and the City has continued with sequel, And Just Like That, which brings back the original cast members Parker, Davis, and Nixon, and a cameo from Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha in SATC.
