Jeremy O. Harris is currently being held in Japan following his arrest last month.
According to Reuters, the 36-year-old Tony-nominated playwright and Emily in Paris actor was detained on November 16 “on suspicion of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs.”
Harris was reportedly stopped at Naha Airport on Okinawa island, where a customs officer allegedly discovered “0.78 grams of crystal containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag.”
Under Japan’s strict drug laws, customs officials filed a criminal accusation on December 4, and formal charging proceedings are expected to begin soon.
It remains unclear whether Harris has secured legal representation in Japan. He is currently being held in Tomigusuku city in southern Okinawa.
Harris rose to prominence as a playwright while studying at Yale University, where he wrote Slave Play. The production transferred to Broadway in 2019 and made history with 12 Tony Award nominations — the most ever for a non-musical play.
As an actor, Harris is widely recognised for portraying Grégory Elliot Duprée in Emily in Paris, along with roles in the Gossip Girl reboot and What We Do in the Shadows.
Years earlier, Harris went viral for sharing a memorable story about Adele, which further amplified his public profile.
