Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars who is best known for his blockbusters and undying charm, was almost cast in one of Hollywood’s most famous movies Titanic, but he didn’t end up in the role.

By the mid-1990s, the 63-year-old star was already a huge star with hits like Top Gun, A Few Good Men, and The Firm.

When the director, James Cameron, started casting for Titanic, Cruise was considered for Jack Dawson, the young artist who falls in love with Rose, played by Kate Winslet.

Why Tom Cruise was not right fit for Titanic?

In the movie, Jack Dawson is brave, kind and full of life and the role needed someone with charm and emotion. However, the Mission Impossible actor could have played him well, but a few things stopped it from happening.

He asked for a high salary and even though the studio could stretch the budget but there were also other issues which didn’t let this happen.

The American Made actor was 35 at the time, while Jack Dawson was written as 20, making the age difference noticeable.

Scheduling also caused the big problems, as the romance-action's filming came between in Cruise’s work on Jerry Maguire and Mission Impossible, which were important films in his career.

Other actors like River Phoenix, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto were also considered before Leonardo DiCaprio got the role.

DiCaprio, now Hollywood’s biggest name, became a star through Titanic while Cruise kept starring in big movies and building his fame throughout his career.

Morover, experts said that Cruise could have brought even more attention to the movie but the timing, budget and character was perfect fit for DiCaprio.

Tom Cruise missing the iconic role, which people still remembers, highlighted how many things, like age, money, and schedules, affect casting in Hollywood. 

Even a big star doesn’t always get the part if the story and timing don’t match.
