Jay-Z, Solange Knowles viral 2014 Met Gala fight gets fresh update

Jay-Z and Solange Knowles, more than a decade ago, went viral for their dispute in the elevator.

During the 2014 Met Gala, the conflict between Young Forever singer and her sister-in-law Solange garnered global attention and made headlines for week.

A CCTV footage of that time revealed Solange confronting, lunging at, swinging at and kicking Jay-Z in the elevator while Beyoncé watched silently.

Now in a recent interview with DailyMail, the fashion designer Oscar G. Lopez, revealed what really happened between the two.

He shared that the fight began over a seemingly very innocent compliment, where Jay-Z praised Rachel Roy for her custom black lace gown, a design by Lopez himself.

“I believe Jay-Z complimented her on the gown, and Solange didn’t think it was appropriate,” he said.

Multiple reports later revealed that Solange reportedly felt Jay-Z’s behaviour crossed a line, especially given ongoing rumours of his infidelity. 

Sources said Solange had been upset throughout the night after seeing Jay-Z talking closely Roy.

Lopez, while reflecting on the incident, shared that Roy ran “late” to the annual gala that year and actually missed the red carpet, “so she couldn’t take pictures.”

Therefore, his design didn’t get much attention until the fight went viral.

Talking about the incident’s impact and how it became most talked-about incidents in celebrity culture, Lopez said, “Any press is good press. Sometimes you benefit from a scandal, even if you’re not directly involved in it… let’s just call it collateral damage.”

“Despite the circumstances, the dress went viral,” Lopez noted, emphasizing the unexpected trajectory of the evening.
