Sabrina Carpenter came under fire after a remark triggered a wave of severe criticism, leading to an apology.
After headlining the first night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday, April 10, the Manchild songstress divided fans over her “yodeling is your culture” comment during her 90-minute set.
Netizens called her out for the “insensitive” remark and expressed disappointment, following which she took to her official X (formerly Twitter) to issue a justification for her actions.
“My apologies i didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly,” the Please Please Please chart-topper wrote. “My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. could have handled it better! now i know what a Zaghrouta is!”
The former Disney channel star-turned pop sensation added, “I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”
Her apologetic update accompanied a post from an online critic, which read, “Sabrina saying that she doesn’t like a cultural arabic cheer… this is so insensitive and islamophobic. i am very disappointed in her.”
The incident happened during Carpenter’s "Sabrinawood" themed set on the main Coachella Stage.
Notably, she is scheduled to headline again on Friday, April 17, for the second weekend.
