Meghan Markle reportedly wants her daughter Lilibet to be more like Princess Diana, which is why she and Prince Harry are said to be considering changing their family surname to Spencer, Diana’s maiden name.

According to reports, the Duke of Sussex has spoken to his uncle, Earl Charles Spencer, about dropping the Mountbatten-Windsor name.

This would also mean a name change for their children, with Lilibet’s full name becoming Lilibet Diana Spencer.

Royal experts believe that Meghan is trying to bring the family closer to Diana’s legacy, possibly as part of a rebrand.

"The whole thing is a bit bizarre,” royal expert Charlotte Griffiths told People’s Channel. “It could be something to do with marketing, because they're not allowed to market the royal name.”

"They tried to set up a website called Sussex Royal and they were told no way, you can't be putting royal names on jams, so I just wonder whether they were trying to angle for a Spencer brand or something."

Griffitts cited a theory by royal author Tom Bower that Meghan might want to change the surname of her daughter because she wants “to be closer to Diana.”

She then said that there does not seem to be any other reason that the Sussexes "suddenly want to become Spencer.”

"It does make sense because I can't think of another reason why you'd want to suddenly become a Spencer,” she noted.

“It's quite a serious title, Mountbatten-Windsor, it makes you very closely associated with the Royal Family. It would really hurt his father's feelings."

"Mountbatten-Windsor is Archie and Lilibet's surname. Lilibet's full name is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, so if her surname was Spencer, it would become Lilibet Diana Spencer.

"So one wonders whether she quite wanted her daughter to be sort of known as Diana Spencer, the new Princess of Wales."

Agreeing with Griffiths, host Ben Leo said it is "chilling" that the Duchess of Sussex would want that for her daughter.
