David Harbour got candid about his mental health journey and the transformative impact of psychotherapy.
The 50-year-old recently shared his experience with therapy.
He said this step has made a ‘world of difference’ in managing his bipolar disorder.
Harbour was diagnosed with the disorder at 25.
The American actor explained in an undated article published on website, Future of Personal Health that while medication has been essential, therapy has provided the deeper work needed for remission.
“Medication alone is only half the battle. There is not a cure-all formula, there is only hard individual work,” Harbour shared.
“Only recently have I started intense psychotherapy, and it has made a world of difference in my treatment.”
The famed Jim Hopper from Stranger Things described the chaotic nature of his manic episodes where thoughts become disordered and symbols take on distorted meanings.
Harbour further said, “My manic episodes are, of course, a manifestation of my own particular psychopathy.”
He emphasized that therapy has helped him confront these patterns and maintain stability.
The actor has long been open about his struggles.
He revealed that he first entered therapy after getting sober in 1999.
“When I quit drinking, it forced me to confront a lot of demons that rose to the surface,” he said.
Beyond his personal revelations, Harbour hopes his openness will encourage others to seek help.
He acknowledged that therapy can be costly but urged those struggling to explore support groups and affordable options.
Harbour’s honesty came as he navigated both professional and personal challenges.
He has faced headlines about his split from singer Lily Allen and rumors of tension with co-star Millie Bobby Brown.
Apart from Stranger Things, he has also worked in movies including Thunderbolts, Black Widow and Revolutionary Road.
