King Charles on Tuesday took part in the historic "Ceremony of the Keys" which took place in the Gardens of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Scotland.

A statement issued by the Buckingham Palace said, "Dating back centuries, this tradition symbolises Edinburgh welcoming its monarch. "

Sharing details of the ceremony, the statement added,  "The Lord Provost presented the Keys of the City to His Majesty, who returned them for safekeeping."

It said, "The King’s Bodyguard Scotland, established in 1822 during King George’s visit, formed the Guard of Honour. Music was provided by The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and their Pipes and Drums, accompanying this traditional royal ceremony in Scotland."

The ceremony comes a day after the royal family highlighted the historic significance of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the Sovereign in Scotland.

The official Instagram account of the family also shared some old pictures of the palace and it's residents including the late Queen Elizabeth, King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla.

It said, "Each summer during Royal Week, The King continues the tradition of celebrating Scottish culture and achievement through engagements across the country, using the Palace as his base."
