Hayao Miyazaki’s true sentiments over The Boy and The Heron are finally revealed by his colleague and Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki.

During the opening ceremony of The Valley of Witch (a nod to Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service) in the Ghibli Land, Japan, the co-owner reflected on Miyazaki’s supposed retirement before te hit movie’s release.

“I never thought he’d announce his retirement, then retract it and then start working on movies again, “he noted.

Reflecting on the movie that took 10 years to complete due to intricate animation, Suzuki shared, “I thought we might die while making it!”, before disclosing the manga artist’s gratefulness over the fantasy film.

He added, “Miyazaki told me he was delighted that he made it to the end of the film's production”.

Notably, the film took over the box office as it clinched an Academy Award in the category for Best Animated Movie.

The 75-year-old also talked about the major achievement and revealed that the duo never anticipated the Oscar, “We're just too old for that stuff”, he remarked.
