Design selected for Queen Elizabeth II memorial

As a result of a design competition, a winning proposal has been selected to honour the late Queen Elizabeth II during the reign of King Charles.

According to reports, Lord Norman Foster's design team has been announced as the winner of the competition. The memorial will be built in St James's Park in central London.

The design will feature a bridge with a glass balustrade, new gates, and commemorative gardens. It will also include a traditional large statue of the late Queen Elizabeth overlooking the Mall, alongside a tribute to her late husband, Prince Philip.

The BBC reported that the translucent bridge is inspired by the shape of the Queen’s wedding tiara.

Speaking to the broadcaster, Lord Foster said, “We respect the biodiversity and nature of that part of the park, which is alive with wildlife.”

The memorial is expected to be unveiled in 2026, coinciding with what would have been Queen Elizabeth’s 100th birthday.

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, a national figurehead, and a towering presence on the world stage for seven decades, died at the age of 96 in September 2022.

Elizabeth became monarch at a time when Britain still retained much of its former empire.
