F1: The Movie could’ve ended differently, leaving Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes' goal incomplete.

Spoiler alert! The following contains major spoilers for F1: The Movie.

F1 ends with Sonny Hayes winning the world championship after his teammate Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) collides with Lewis Hamilton (also a producer on the film).

However, director and co-writer Joseph Kosinski says they considered giving the title to Joshua but ultimately decided to bring closure to Sonny’s story.

"We discussed the ending a lot, and there's certainly a version where that happens," Kosinski told Entertainment Weekly.

"But ultimately, where we landed was the culmination of Sonny's story," he shared.

He noted that Joshua is "at the beginning of his career," and has a long time ahead to win races, unlike Sonny.

"Like he says to Sonny, 'I'm going to win a million, mate.' So it feels like Sonny has achieved what he needs to achieve, but Joshua is just at the start of an incredible career."

Kosinski also revealed if he intends to make a sequel of the film, which ends with Sonny going to Baja, Mexico to inquire about a “driver wanted” ad he sees in the beginning of the film.

The director said, “For him, it's just, what's the next challenge? What's the next mountain to climb? And Baja is something that's completely different than Formula One and would be a really fun adventure to see him on."

"But that's up to the audience to decide if they want to see it," he said of a sequel.

"I loved working with this group of people. I loved creating our own Formula One team. I'd love to see what's up next for APXGP and Sonny Hayes," added Kosinski.
